The Unit for Valorization of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants within the Laboratory of Pastoral Ecosystems and Valorization of Spontaneous Plants and Microorganisms has the main mission of valorizing aromatic and medicinal plants (AMP), which constitute a privileged target group in the laboratory's research programs. For over 30 years, the laboratory has been conducting a research program dedicated to AMP, particularly those growing in southern Tunisia, known for their adaptation to stressful climatic and environmental conditions, and consequently their richness in biomolecules of significant interest sought after by various industries (chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, etc.). Our work focuses on studying the phytochemical composition and biological activities ( in vivo and in vitro ) of these plants, particularly their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties, among others.
With expertise in phytochemistry, chromatography, and plant biochemistry, we have developed a network of collaborations with European, American, Japanese, and Arab researchers, allowing us to gain recognized experience in innovation and technology transfer.
The laboratory also offers its technical expertise to local NGOs and supports young entrepreneurs in the AMP field, actively contributing to sustainable development. Very interesting results obtained within this program have been the subject of numerous scientific articles published in international journals. Some of these results have also been patented at national and international levels. As a focal point of the AMP sector in Tunisia and a center of excellence in this field, the laboratory has been organizing a biennial international scientific event since 2004, the SIPAM (International Symposium on Aromatic and Medicinal Plants) . This event, which brings together key players in the sector, is organized in partnership with internationally renowned institutions such as ICARDA, USDA, and ISHS. SIPAM serves as a platform for exchange and collaboration, enhancing the visibility of the AMP sector both nationally and internationally.
